Tonight’s the night!
After two months of sewing and stitching, around 50 fashion studies students from several Edmonton high schools are ready to flaunt the garments they’ve created for the third annual Ready To Shine fashion show at Kingsway Mall.
While the aspiring designers sit wringing their hands as they wait for their fabric masterpieces to flutter down the runway, I’ll be backstage stifling nervous belching. The fashion show will feature a number of “celebrity” models, which includes myself and other Edmonton media personalities who were each assigned to a school. Not falling = a win for me.
I’m so excited to be a part of the event for the first time this year. I’ve had the pleasure of working with the uber-talented teens over at Harry Ainlay. They’ve have made me a casual Japanese-inspired top, a recycled career skirt made out of old neck ties, and a canary yellow evening gown. The Ainlay students — and their teacher, Terri-Lynn Hyland — have been working so, so hard to perfect the pieces and I’m thrilled to be showing them off.
Other participating schools include Amiskwaciy Academy, L.Y. Cairns, M.E. LaZerte, Jasper Place, Ross Sheppard and W.P. Wagner.
If you’re looking to attend tonight’s festivities, the Ready To Shine VIP gala takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. on the upper level of Kingsway Mall near Sport Chek and includes wine, appetizers and front-row seats to the fashion show. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased by contacting Li Ann at 780-479-5955 or at lolivario@oxfordproperties.com. The fashion show takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the main level near Pink and MAC. Tickets can be purchased for $10 at any of the seven participating schools or at Kingsway Mall guest services.
All proceeds go towards the Edmonton Public Schools Foundation, which provides full-day kindergarten classes for at-risk students in socially vulnerable neighbourhoods.
