Cassandra HobbinsCassandra Hobbins‘ career is about to get crazier than a pair of Alexander McQueen armadillo heels.

The Edmonton born-and-bred designer, now based in New York City, will be competing in the second season of NBC’s Fashion Star. This is huge news for the 30-year-old, who will have an opportunity to win a multi-million dollar prize to launch original fashion lines in Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and Express.

I had a chance to speak with an extremely excited Hobbins over the phone yesterday. A full profile will be featured in the Journal‘s Feb. 15 Style section, but for now, I can tell you that Hobbins drops E-town shout-outs like a boss on the show (Fashion Star has already finished filming). I can also tell you that she used to leave her design sketches with random Woodwards cashiers when she was young in hopes of catching the eye of some big wig, and that she thought she would throw up after meeting the show’s celebrity mentors Nicole Ritchie, Jessica Simpson and John Varvatos (she did not throw up).

Fashion Star is a reality competition series that f0llows 13 designers who vie to have their clothes purchased by retailers Saks, Macy’s and Express. Starting March 8, the show will air Fridays from 8 to 9 p.m. ET.

I’ll be keeping tabs on Hobbins as the show progresses. You can also follow Hobbins on Twitter (@cass_hobbins). She’ll be live tweeting each episode.

Hobbins is currently the designer of her own line PROSE IV, which has been sold at American Rag, revolveclothing.com, EVA and other boutiques.  She’s also worked for a variety of fashion retailers. Most recently, Hobbins was head sportswear designer for Tahari ASL.
