MalorieLocal designer Malorie Urbanovitch showed her F/W 2013 collection last night at Startup Edmonton. The venue was beautiful, packed with industry professionals and fashion lovers alike interested in seeing what Urbanovitch had up her sleeves.

Midnight blues were the first to emerge from the runway’s shadows. Simple shift dresses boasted delicate silhouettes and an easy air. Lighting was kept to a minimum (it took a bit of squinting to see the pieces at first), which evoked a sense of urban mystery. Models wore teal eyeliner with hair styled to look rain-soaked. It was all about elemental beauty.

Urbanovitch, a champion of basic colours, also included blacks, browns, burgundys, burnt oranges, creams and sea foam greens into her collection of dresses, jackets, skirts and pants. Lovely. My favourite, by far, was an oversized black alpaca sweater with a matching floor-length skirt.

Although last night’s show wasn’t part of the regular Western Canada Fashion Week schedule (which kicks off tonight at the TransAlta Arts Barns) it piggybacked the semi-annual runway event and added a twist by being the first ever off-site showcase.
